Earlier this year, Warner Bros. finally pulled the trigger on bringing its SVOD platform HBO Max to the UK. Prior to this, it had relied on Sky and, primarily, the channel Sky Atlantic to deliver its prestige productions to Brits. While those ties remain, fans can now get an expanded collection of Warner Bros. shows and films from the platform.
The total library available is truly colossal, built over decades on television dominance in the US and overseas via partners like Sky. So, its arrival in the UK has required a lot of work behind the scenes. Now that it’s here, and we can see the full offering and stats, it’s clear that it was a potentially industry-changing move.
A Test Case for AI
Despite the majority of interactions with HBO productions having come via a Sky TV subscription, HBO Max managed to become the fastest streaming service to hit one million UK subscribers.
Reports suggest that, within its first five days, it hit 1.5 million subscribers. Clearly, they found an audience looking for a more accessible path to HBO.
To make this possible, the British Board of Film Classification turned to an artificial intelligence tool to enable them to apply ratings to the huge back catalogue on the streamer.
Of course, many will have already been given ratings by the board, but there was a need to update some and apply more specific ratings to individual episodes.
It helped to classify everything set to launch on the streamer in about six months. Had it been put entirely to compliance officers, the task would have taken over 1,500 working days. Reportedly, this was the first time the classification body had turned to AI and proved to be a successful and prudent move.

Upon its arrival, something that became very notable was the array of plans and a promotional set of plans that are designed to help bolster the immediate user base.
The saver plans, which run for a year, can save subscribers £5, £9, £10, or £11 per month for the commitment, but there isn’t any form of promoted trial of the full experience.
This tends to be a commonplace addition in entertainment – especially online entertainment. A site with bingo, slots, and table games can offer a bingo deposit bonus of £40 in bonuses after a £10 play. This way, newcomers get to try out more of the experience than their initial payment would normally allow.
With the launch of the streamer, the low-end of the short-term subscriptions grants access to a maximum of HD for £6 that month, and it comes with advertisements. For a long time, Netflix, Apple TV, and more were offering between a week and 30 days of free trials to try to convince Brits to join for the long run.
Given the number of subscribers that they got through the door at launch, it seems like HBO Max didn’t need a free trial tier. This will almost certainly have further knock-on effects in the industry, as will the successful use of AI in the classification of content before its arrival.
